I went out with a team to pray and see what God wanted to do. We met in a park that’s in between two of the most notorious bars in Jaco at 11:00 p.m. We met together and prayed and then split up into groups. My group saw two women sitting by one of the bars. Bleu approached them and told them we would like to pray for people and if they had anything they needed prayer for just let us know. She was so nervous at first she said it all in English. The women were non-receptive. Then she finally concluded, “so if you want prayer, we’re here.” This time in Spanish. Oh! Prayer! The women responded. Then everyone laughed because Bleu realized she had been speaking in English by mistake. Through her mistake and laughter, you could see the walls came down. From that point on we were able to talk with them and get to know them a little bit. They are both from the Dominican Republic and neither one has any family here. They miss their families. It was apparent that they were prostitutes and it was pretty amazing they were even taking their time to talk to us. Bleu told them all about God, Jesus and the grace that He has for us no matter what we’re doing. They nodded their heads and seemed interested. Then we prayed for them. We met back in the park 1 1/2 hours later. Each group had also met with prostitutes and prayed for them and we felt like God was glorified at a time of night when God is usually not even thought of.
I am seeing that there is an incredible opportunity to reach out to these women. If someone wanted to come and teach English that would we an incredible open door to build relationships and share the gospel. It would definitely be best if it was a woman, though, not me.
So yesterday I was in the bank. I was kind of frustrated because it was taking so long. I was in there over an hour just to pay my rent. When I came out I saw a woman walking towards the bank. I thought I had seen her somewhere before. I greeeted her and she looked at me with no recognition and kept walking. “You don’t remember me,” I said. “I was part of a group in the park that talked ot you and your friend and we prayed with you.” Her face lit up with recognition. I just said hi and God bless you and I left. About 5 minutes later as I was turning onto my street I saw the other lady. I greeted her as well and she seemed happy as she remembered the night we prayed for her.
We believe that God is doing something here in Jaco. He’s on the move and things are happening. I’m excited to be here and be a part of it.
